Surface runoff estimation using geographic information system and soil conservation service-curve number method for sub catchments of Karamadai, Tamil Nadu

Water conservation becomes essential as the resource scarcer. The most important step in managing water resources is estimating watershed runoff generated from rainfall, and rainfall are key factors determining availability for surface storage groundwater recharge. So, this study mainly focused on three sub-catchments of Karamadai, Tamil Nadu, India, using heavy to extreme daily events received area within span 20 years (2000–2019). was performed ArcGIS environment remote sensing data. SCSCN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method used estimate runoff. changes land use each sub-catchment were analysed decade studied their impact depth. cover classification map prepared LISS III satellite imagery 2006 2016 by supervised classification. curve number assigned based well hydrologic soil group. weighted calculated under then calculate storm maximum occurred 2011 all catchments Karamadai block. It found that more Mandrai Pallam catchment compared Periya Pare Pallam, had less moisture retention capacity than other two catchments. priority must be given while planning implement measures.
